Weird how life just keeps going. Each day seems to last forever, and the day-to-day is survived by the anticipation of the next big thing (winter break, a family trip, a birthday...), then suddenly you look at your family blog and see it hasn't been updated since your oldest son turned 1 and you announced your pregnancy with his younger brother. Oy.
So here's a very brief update:
- Judah had a great 2nd year, and he's turning out to be the kind of big brother that we were praying for...aside from the occasional kicks to his kid brother's face. He is extremely kind, hilarious, and he loves to learn. His current favorites are jokes, sword fighting, pancakes, and doing sticker books with Daddy. He is always on the go, and always ready for a good belly laugh.
- My pregnancy went very well, migraines aside. In fact, I felt so much better than the first go-round that we were sure we were having a girl. Spoiler alert: we didn't. Jeshua Jay Hoff was born on August 1, 2011 after a 2 hour unmedicated labor. It's a good thing I'm a year removed from that moment - I'm a little fuzzy on all of the gory details. I know it ended in a handsome, healthy, almost-black-eyed "buxom" (according to the midwife) little guy. He has grown to be a cuddler and a drooler whose stubborness daily reminds us of our dependence on the Lord's grace.
- Jeshua (we call him "Desh" thanks to Judah) had a rough first few months. He got the rotavirus when he was just 2 months old, and it was pretty brutal on the little guy. He recovered within a week or so, but was eventually diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease (totally RAD) which is basically what they call asthma before they call it asthma (which they can't diagnose until a child is at least 5 years old). After MANY (many many many) doctor's visits, prayers, tears, and very long nights we got him on new medicine and he has been wheeze-free (for the most part) since the beginning of June! Praise God! We are waiting to see how he handles the winter season, and we're praying that he has outgrown this for good.
- Nathan is entering into his final semester of classes for his PhD. He has been working extremely hard to progress through the program as quickly as he has, and he has been doing an excellent job with his work. In fact, he was recognized in front of the entire school for his academic achievements and received an award, which he promptly used to award himself with an iPhone 4S (he affectionately refers to Siri as "she/her". Creepy.) He is teaching full-time at Providence Christian School of Dallas teaching class 5-6 science, Bible, and History. On top of all of that he is a Graduate Teaching Assistant at DTS. He has been keeping himself busy! But the Lord has been faithful and has given him success in every realm (including being a full-time hunny and daddy!).
- I have been trying to keep up with my ever-growing and ever-learning little guys. I have been doing a toddler co-op with some friends where we teach the kids lessons, do activities, and read books. Judah looks forward to "co-op day!" every week. I have also been helping lead a Bible study with my friend and neighbor for the women in our apartment complex. It has been an incredibly fun and refreshing time for me to be in the Word with faithful women, who also teach me how to be cool.
- We just returned from a 5.5 week tour of the east coast: Bethlehem, PA; Purcellville, VA; Avon, NC. We visited both families and had an incredible time. Judah and Desh really got to know all of their grandparents (which warms my heart) and their many, many cousins. They also got to play in the ocean, jump on giant trampolines, put on plays, dig in sandboxes, learn to wink, and listen to more Justin Roberts than we ever knew possible.
- Nathan and I celebrated our 5-year anniversary on July 14 (wahoo!). We left the boys with Grandma and Grandpa (Nate's parents) for the weekend (our first time away since Judah was born! Need I say it again? Praise God!) while we went to Cape May, NJ. It was wonderful, and so refreshing.
It has been a wonderful, challenging, exciting, painful, and shaping 1.5 years. God has been so faithful, and we are so blessed!
